Sweet Labour Art Collective
Sweet Labour Art Collective is an interdisciplinary collective rooted between London, Ontario and Oneida Nation of the Thames.
Our work brings together dance, somatic practice, improvisation, storytelling, film, performance, embodied research, and community-engaged art. Through collaborative creation processes, we explore themes of relationship, ecology, ancestry, memory, grief, transformation, and collective care.
Collaborators include Ruth Douthwright, Kevin O’Connor, Montana Summers, Marshall Stonefish, Brooke Chrisjohn, Brandon Valdivia, , and guest artists from across artistic, academic, and community practices.
Much of our recent work has emerged through long-term collaborative research exploring land, body, ceremony, mortality, improvisation, and relational ways of making art together. These projects move between studio practice, performance, film, workshops, community gatherings, and participatory public events.
A central thread within the collective’s work has been an ongoing dialogue with the life and legacy of founding member Billy Douthwright (Onʌyoteˀa·ká· / Oneida artist, and designer). Following Billy’s passing in 2017, the collective continued to create work in relationship with memory, transformation, and the question of how artistic practice can remain in conversation with those who are no longer physically present.
Recent projects include Compost: Recomposing Relations, wakh^tahslu:nihe - dressing up the garden, Awahite: Strawberry Mourning / Strawberry Heart community gatherings such as HEARTH, and ongoing interdisciplinary collaborations through Somatic Gym, and international artistic residencies.
